Many of these territories were in active combat zones or served as front lines for a long time. According to mine action specialists, it is precisely these non-obvious, peripheral infrastructure areas that conceal a high level of mine danger. The attention of primary demining services naturally focuses on critical facilities — power lines, gas pipelines, and major highways — while local roads may wait months for inspection.

The threat of unexploded ordnance, remnants of cluster munitions, or tripwires in the grass creates a critical barrier to the full restoration of the educational process. Child psychology, natural curiosity, and a tendency to stray from beaten paths make schoolchildren disproportionately vulnerable to the mine threat. Parents quite justifiably refuse to let their children go to school if the surrounding area has not undergone thorough non-technical and technical surveys. Even a perfectly protected and renovated school will remain empty as long as the road to it is perceived by society as a lottery.

Aerial Reconnaissance: Optimizing Area Inspection

Classic manual demining is an extremely thorough but slow and resource-intensive process. A sapper with a metal detector can spend several days clearing a small area, constantly distracted by everyday metal debris typical of affected territories. When it comes to preparing for a specific school year start date, communities face a severe shortage of time. Inspecting tens of kilometers of access roads using traditional methods simply does not fit into tight deadlines. This requires the implementation of modern approaches to non-technical surveys, which allow for rapid risk mapping and the rational distribution of specialists' efforts.

Remote sensing using unmanned systems has become an integral part of humanitarian surveys. The use of drones equipped with high-resolution optics and thermal imagers allows operators to safely record surface anomalies. Remnants of engineering fortifications, trenches, shell craters, and visually noticeable unexploded ordnance are clearly visible from the air. The collected data sets are analyzed in detail to create accurate maps of mine contamination. Such a macro-level view makes it possible to identify dangerous patterns, for example, the directions of former artillery shelling that cross civilian routes.

The seasonal factor adds complexity to this process. By the end of summer, tall and dense vegetation tightly conceals the ground, making visual searches from human height almost impossible. At the same time, autumn rains can erode the soil, pushing previously hidden objects to the surface. Aerial reconnaissance helps record changes in the terrain and identify suspicious areas even before a sapper sets foot there, significantly narrowing the zone of direct hazardous work.
